
Professor Dr. Noraini is a Professor in the Department of Accounting, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She currently serves as the Deputy Dean (Academic and Internationalisation) of KENMS. Her areas of expertise include Islamic accounting, Shariah auditing, Shariah governance and Shariah risk management of Islamic financial institutions. Throughout her academic career, she has contributed extensively to teaching, research, consultancy and curriculum development in accounting and Islamic finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Professor Dr. Noraini obtained her Bachelor of Science in Economics (Accounting) from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, United Kingdom. She subsequently pursued a Master of Arts in Accounting and Finance (with Distinction) at the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, before completing her PhD at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, specialising in Accounting and Risk Reporting for Islamic Banks. She is also a Certified Shariah Practitioner (CSP) awarded by the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS).
Over the years, Professor Dr. Noraini has held numerous academic and leadership positions within IIUM, including Head of Research and Head of the Department of Accounting at KENMS. Her governance and corporate experience include serving as an Audit Committee Member of IIUM Holdings Sdn. Bhd. and a Board Member of IIUM Lower Education Sdn. Bhd., contributing to institutional development, strategic planning, and governance oversight.
Professor Dr. Noraini has also been actively involved in the Islamic finance industry through various Shariah advisory and governance roles. She currently serves as a member of the Shariah Committee of Amanah Raya Berhad and United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad. Previously, she served on the Shariah Committees of AmMetLife Takaful Berhad and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, providing guidance on Shariah governance, compliance, and Islamic financial operations.
Her professional engagements extend beyond academia and industry practice. She has served as a consultant with the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) for projects relating to Islamic banking regulations in the Maldives and Tajikistan. She was also involved in the Shariah Audit Framework Research Committee established to develop a comprehensive Shariah Audit Framework in support of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Shariah Governance Framework. In addition, she participated in a Shariah audit engagement with Amanie Advisors Ltd (Dubai) involving the Islamic banking window of a conventional bank in Saudi Arabia.
In recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to teaching and research, Professor Dr. Noraini was awarded the IIUM Murabbi Award for the Category of Arts and Social Sciences under IIUM Takrim 2020. Her research and professional interests continue to focus on Islamic accounting, Shariah auditing, risk management and governance, and the advancement of best practices within the Islamic finance industry.
